Work that produces something the source did not contain: an explanation in your own words, an example, a question. It sits above merely handling the material, such as underlining or rereading, which keep you inside what is already on the page.
How to spot it
Look at what you produced in the last hour. If nothing exists now that did not exist before you sat down, the hour was spent handling the material and not building anything with it.
